Verkiai Palace: Reviving Lithuania’s Heritage

Verkiai Palace is one of the most significant monuments of Lithuania’s architectural and cultural heritage, located in the northern part of Vilnius. This unique ensemble combines features of late Baroque and Classicism and has for centuries served as a center of cultural, spiritual, and political life in the region. The palace and its surrounding park form a historical landscape that preserves the traces of different eras, embodying the harmony between humanity, nature, and culture.

The history of Verkiai Palace dates back to the 15th century, when the land belonged to Lithuanian dukes. Over the centuries, the palace has experienced periods of decline and renewal, changing owners and functions — from a spiritual residence to a scientific research base. Despite the trials of wars and time, it has retained its authentic spirit and remains an important symbol of Lithuania’s cultural memory.

The project dedicated to the research and restoration of Verkiai Palace aims to return this landmark to its historical and cultural dignity. It focuses on architectural restoration and the creation of an educational and cultural space that will promote Lithuanian heritage among both local residents and the international community.
For Vilnius, this project represents the revival of one of the city’s most valuable historical landmarks, the strengthening of the capital’s cultural identity, and the integration of heritage into contemporary urban life. The palace will become a platform for exhibitions, research, and cultural programs that connect history with the present.

In 2026, the active restoration phase is set to begin:
        •        Restoration of the historical fountain, a key element of the palace ensemble;
        •        Commencement of exterior and interior restoration works aimed at preserving authentic architectural details;
        •        Collaboration with historians, architects, and cultural scholars to develop a scientifically grounded restoration concept;
        •        Development of educational programs and public events dedicated to the history of the palace, Lithuania’s cultural heritage, and the importance of its preservation.

The initiative’s goal is to transform Verkiai Palace into a living cultural center — a place where history inspires the present, and heritage becomes the foundation for new ideas and mutual understanding between cultures.
